In the wake of Superstorm Sandy in 2013-2014, Urbanomics prepared economic and housing market assessments for use in seven New York Rising Plans assembled by two multidisciplinary consulting teams led by Arup and Perkins Eastman Architects. The communities in question ranged from wealthy residential areas, to workforce neighborhoods with convenience retail strips, to more economically complex office and industrial areas along the South Shore of Long Island in Nassau County.
The housing analyses evaluated the impacts of Superstorm Sandy on housing sales and demand by structure characteristics and demographic type with particular focus on vulnerable populations. The economic analyses ranged from surveys of vacancies, retail gaps analyses, and best practices for business continuity in a region that had already been experiencing economic hard times to more detailed analyses of specific market demand for available properties and workforce needs in opportunity areas such as office and industrial zones.
